Frequently Asked Questions
MIND-BODY APPROACH
A MindBody Practitioner is a holistic health & wellness coach who offers clients a deep understanding of what contributes to their emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual health, through science-based education, awareness of the mind-body connection, and how thoughts can create physical stress, impacting the health of the body.
Mind Body Syndome was initially known as Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS). Dr. John Sarno was the pioneer of mind-body medicine. He was an attending physician and Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine. His concept of Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS), later termed Tension Myoneural Syndrome, is based on the theory that the mind (stress/emotions) creates real pain symptoms. The term Mind Body Syndrome (MBS) later came about to incorporate other mind-body symptoms / conditions.
The concept of TMS/MBS is often used interchangeably with other similar concepts, such as:
- neuroplasticity
- neuroplastic pain / symptoms
- nociplastic pain
- neural circuit pain
- mind-body symptoms / disorders
- psychosomatic symptoms / disorders
- psychophysiologic disorders (PPD)
- nervous system dysregulation
- central sensitization
- psychogenic disorders
Although every individual is different and proper testing must take place to rule out serious medical conditions, experts in the latest neuroscience research believe many symptoms may fall under the TMS/MBS umbrella, including those related to:
- CHRONIC PAIN SYNDROMES
- back pain
- foot pain
- headaches
- fibromyalgia
- migraines
- myofascial pain syndrome
- neck pain
- pelvic pain
- piriformis syndrome
- repetitive stress injury
- sciatic pain
- TMJ
- tendonitis
- vulvodynia
- whiplash
- AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM RELATED DISRODERS
- functional neurological disorder (FND)
- functional dyspepsia
- inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST)
- interstitial cystitis (irritable bladder)
- irritable bowel syndrome
- reflex sympathetic dystrophy (CRPS)
- POTS
- OTHER CONDITIONS
- anxiety
- chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS)
- depression
- dizziness
- Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
- hives (chronic)
- insomnia
- long Covid
- multiple chemical sensitivities
- OCD
- paresthesia (numbness, tingling, burning)
- PTSD
- spasmodic dysphonia
- tinnitus
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is an evidence-based technique used to retrain the brain to process signals from the body in a different manner.
Learn more about PRT by reading HOW IT WORKS on the Pain Psychology Center website.
Assuming a medical doctor has ruled out serious disease or infection, complete the following questionnaire to see if TMS/MBS can explain your symptoms:
1. Have you had pain (symptoms) persistently or intermittently for longer than six (6) months?
2. Does your pain level (symptom presence/intensity) change throughout the day or from day to day?
(For example: Your pain may be worse in the morning/evening, or you tend to have good days and bad days.)
3. Do you have pain in multiple areas of the body?
4. Does your pain (symptoms) move around, spread, or change location?
(For example: Most of the time your pain is in the left hip, but sometimes, you experience pain in the right hip.)
5. Have you ever experienced any other chronic condition?
(For example: Do you currently suffer with, or have you ever suffered from, something like IBS, headaches, etc.?)
6. Do you ever experience random symptoms that don’t seem to have an explanation, like acne, itching, etc.?
7. Does your pain (symptoms) seem to have a pattern?
(For example: You always experience back pain after sitting for thirty (30) minutes, or your neck hurts every time you walk the dog.)
8. Are there any exceptions to your pain (symptoms)?
(For example: You don’t seem to be in pain when you’re distracted, or the pain is better/worse during vacation.)
9. Do you identify with any of the following traits?
- Perfectionist
- Ambitious
- People-pleaser
- Anxious Personality
- Catastrophic Thinking
- Overwhelmed Easily
- Fearful of Rejection/Criticism
- Sensitive
- Overly Health Conscious
- Victim Mentality
- Stoic
- Legalist
- Low Self-Esteem
- Codependent
10. Did your current problem emerge after recovering from another health issue?
11. Were you going through a stressful time leading up to the onset of pain (symptoms)?
12. Were you going through any life changes when you started experiencing pain (symptoms)?
13. Have you ever experienced more pain (symptoms), as a result of hearing other people or the media share warnings or concerns about health issues?
14. Do you tend to plan your day around your pain (symptoms)?
** IF YOU ANSWERED YES TO THE 1ST QUESTION AND TO 3+ ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS, THERE’S A HIGH LIKELIHOOD YOU COULD BE SUFFERING FROM TMS/MBS. **
